We all have a foundation story. A story that makes sense of how we’ve arrived where we are. A story that gives us a fuller perspective, that has a direct effect on our lives. This is how foundation stories work. They root our reality in a way that brings meaning and mission.
For Christians, Genesis is our foundation story. Abraham's story in Genesis 12-22 serves as the bedrock for redemptive history. God tells us he plans to bring salvation and blessing to all the nations of the earth through one man and his family. All who are in Jesus are grafted into this one family. Since we are a part of this family, we inherit the blessing and mission given to Abraham.
We must recognize that our foundation story gives meaning and mission to our lives. Genesis 18:19 says, "For I have chosen him, that he may command his children and his household after him to keep the way of the LORD by doing righteousness and justice, so that the LORD may bring to Abraham what he has promised him.” What does it mean for us to "do righteousness and justice?" What does it mean for us to bless others because we've been blessed?
In our sermon series Blessed To Be A Blessing we will look at Genesis 12-22 to better see how our foundation story shapes our lives as God's people.
