Most churches that offer membership, bring in new members through a class or seminar. At NewCity, we bring members into the community through a Membership Experience. A class assumes that information is all you need to join a church. A seminar allows you to download that information as quickly, efficiently and pain free as possible. An experience (while more costly) provides the opportunity to both understand conceptually and experience holistically who the church is and what it values. Body Life cannot be transmitted as mere information. Enduring, Covenantal, Vow-Bound Relationships cannot be formed in a Saturday morning seminar.
NewCity 201: A Membership Experience
At NewCity, we offer a Membership Experience for you to be able to better understand what church membership to NewCity looks and feels like. This is done through Ten 90-minute sessions over three months.
A prerequisite for NewCity 201 is faithful participation in a [Home] Group.
NewCity 201 Membership Process
In the first three weeks, we cover extensively “what, why and how we do what we do.” In time, we expect every member to be part of a team that leads a [Home] Group, so this time not only explains what we do and the Biblical rationale behind it, but also how to do it. In weeks four through nine, in gender specific groups, we study God’s extravagant grace (and diagnose our unbelieving hearts) through a study called Gospel Foundations. Finally, week ten is a conversation on the historic membership vows of our denomination, so that we know in detail what we are saying “I do” to.
Once you complete NewCity 201, if you desire to join the church, you will fill out the Membership Application and deliver it to the church office (mail or email). In the weeks that follow, you will be interviewed by an elder and your [Home] Group leader(s). The final step of the Membership Process is being publicly received at CityWorship.
